Revive or Paste: which one is for my canvas?

Use Revive on ripSMART Select canvas and Paste on ripSMART Classic canvas. Each is made to match its own canvas range, and comes in every colour of that range.

Both do the same job. They are water-based acrylic coatings for acrylic-coated ripstop canvas. A coat restores faded colour, puts waterproofing back into a worn surface and seals the stitch lines, where most leaks start.

Both fill sewing pinholes and both are anti-fungal. Revive is a liquid, sold in litres. Paste is a thicker paste, sold by the kilogram, and dries fast.

How to re-waterproof a tent

Roll or spray it on in thin coats, dried properly in between.

01

Test first

On a big job, start with a 1 litre or 1kg tub on one panel and check the colour before you do the whole tent. No primer is needed.

02

Apply thin

Use a foam roller or a spray gun, and put it on in thin layers. It can be diluted with water.

03

Let each coat dry

Dry each layer properly in the sun before the next. On a summer’s day that is usually 4 to 5 hours.

04

Two to three coats

Plan on 2 to 3 coats for faded canvas. Give the stitch lines extra attention: that is where most leaks start.

Which sizes and colours are available?

Each comes in every colour of its canvas range. Most colours are ordered in for you, so ask us about stock.

Revive and Paste FAQ

Can I re-waterproof an old canvas tent?

Often, yes. If acrylic-coated ripstop canvas has faded or started to leak, a coat of Revive or Paste restores the colour, puts waterproofing back into the surface and seals the stitch lines. Canvas that is torn or has gone brittle needs repair or replacing, not a coating.

Do I use Revive or Paste?

Do I need a primer or a thinner?

No primer is needed. Both can be diluted with water.

How do I apply it?

With a foam roller or a spray gun, in thin layers. Let each layer dry properly in the sun, usually 4 to 5 hours on a summer’s day, and plan on 2 to 3 coats.

How much do I need?

As a guide, 20 litres of Revive has done about two tents of 100 m² each. It depends on how worn the canvas is, so on a big job start with a small tub on one panel first.

Will it stop my seams from leaking?

Both seal stitch lines, which is where most canvas leaks start, and both fill sewing pinholes.
