What is Serafil M20 thread?

Serafil M20 is a heavy duty, 3-ply continuous filament polyester sewing thread, made in South Africa. The version we stock is UV stabilised, so it suits seams that live outdoors: canvas covers, tents, car interiors and upholstery.

M20 is the thicker end of the range. Thread tickets work the other way round to fabric weights: the lower the number, the thicker the thread. M20 is made for heavy seams, not dress fabric.

Strong, with some give. It breaks at 92.4 N and stretches 29.8% before it does, which lets a seam move with the fabric instead of snapping.

Continuous filament. The fibres run the full length of the thread rather than being spun from short staple, which gives a smooth, even thread that runs cleanly through a heavy duty machine.

Use the right needle. The recommended needle is Nm 130 to 140. Too fine a needle frays the thread and drops stitches.

Matched to our fabrics. It is the thread for the canvas, cover and seat fabrics we sell: ripstop canvas, Steenbok, all-weather canvas and seat fabrics like Renoster and Vlakvark.

Sewing on Velcro? M20 is the thread to stitch our sew-on Velcro tape onto covers and tents that live outdoors.

Made here. Serafil is made in South Africa in an ISO 9001:2015 certified factory, and we hold it in our Midrand warehouse.

What can I sew with Serafil M20?

Medium to heavy seams in materials that work hard, indoors and out.

Canvas and tarpaulin covers
Tents and canopies
Caravan and boat covers
Car seats and car interiors
Furniture upholstery
Luggage and bags
Outdoor cushions
Webbing straps and handles

Making a lifting sling, harness or anything that holds a person? Ask us first: that calls for a heavier thread and a tested assembly, not M20.

Serafil M20 FAQ

What does M20 mean?

It is the thread’s ticket number, its thickness. With thread, a lower number means a thicker thread, so M20 is a heavy thread for heavy seams. This one is 1,619 dtex, 3 ply.

What needle size should I use with M20 thread?

Nm 130 to 140. A needle that is too fine frays the thread and drops stitches.

Is it suitable for outdoor work?

Yes. The version we stock is UV stabilised, made for covers, tents and seats that stand in the sun. It is polyester, which does not rot the way cotton thread does.

How strong is Serafil M20?

A single thread breaks at 92.4 N and stretches 29.8% before it does. For lifting slings, harnesses or anything that holds a person, ask us first: that work needs a heavier thread and a tested assembly.

What colours do you stock?

Black (14), white (19), grey (710) and orange (3070). Black is the colour most customers order. For another Serafil shade, send us the shade number.

How much thread is on a cone?

3,000m. We sell it by the cone.

Is it locally made?

Yes. Serafil is made in South Africa in an ISO 9001:2015 certified factory, and we hold it in Midrand.

Why do you not show prices?

Price depends on the colour and the quantity. Send the colour, the number of cones and your delivery town and we will send pricing, the same day.
