GSM measures fabric weight – but fabric performance depends on five things working together: GSM, weave structure, warp and weft construction, coating type, and treatments. This guide explains each one in plain language, with real examples from the Smart Ikhaya range.

In brief

GSM is the number everyone asks about – but it only tells you part of the story. Two fabrics with the same GSM can perform completely differently in real use. Once you understand how weight, weave, coating, and treatments work together, choosing the right fabric becomes much simpler.

Every week, someone contacts us and asks some version of the same question.

“What GSM do I need?”

It is a perfectly reasonable place to start. GSM is the number that appears on every spec sheet, every product listing, and every quote. It feels like the answer.

But here is the thing: two fabrics with exactly the same GSM can perform completely differently in real use. One lasts five years outdoors. The other starts failing in eighteen months.

Same number. Very different fabric.

GSM matters – but it is one part of a larger picture. Once you understand how the pieces fit together, choosing the right fabric becomes much simpler.

Fabric Specifications: Performance Is a System

Think of a fabric like a car. The engine size tells you something useful. But it does not tell you how the car handles, how safe it is, or how long it will last. For that, you need to know about the suspension, the tyres, the chassis, and how it was built.

Fabric works the same way. Performance comes from five things interacting with each other:

01 GSM

How much material is present. Weight per square meter.

02 Warp and Weft

The two yarn directions that form the structural foundation of the fabric.

03 Weave Type

How those yarns interlock – and how that controls strength and tear behaviour.

04 Coating or Lamination

What has been applied to the surface to improve waterproofing and durability.

05 Treatments

UV stabilisation, anti-fungal, flame retardant – application-specific protection.

None of these fully defines a fabric alone. Together, they tell you almost everything you need to know.

The 5-Part Fabric Evaluation Framework

  1. What is the GSM? How much material is present.
  2. What is the weave? Plain, twill, or ripstop – each behaves differently under stress.
  3. What is the coating? Acrylic, PVC, PU – and is it integrated or applied as a surface treatment?
  4. Is it waterproof, water-repellent, or water-resistant? Three distinct performance levels – understand which your application requires.
  5. What treatments does it have? UV, anti-fungal, flame retardant – relevant to your specific environment.

01. GSM: Weight Is Not the Same as Strength

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It measures how much the fabric weighs – not how strong it is, not how waterproof it is, and not how long it will last.

Higher GSM generally means more material. More material generally means more durability. But “generally” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

A 500gsm fabric with a poor weave and a thin coating can fail faster than a well-engineered 300gsm fabric under the same conditions. The weight is there. The engineering is not.

GSM tells you how much material is present. It does not tell you how efficiently that material is engineered.

As a rough guide, here is how GSM maps to application types across our range:

Notice that 500gsm appears in two very different products – ripSMART ripstop canvas for safari tents, and coverSMART Renoster for car seat upholstery. Same weight. Completely different fabric, construction, and purpose. That is exactly why GSM is only the starting point.

02. Warp and Weft: The Skeleton of the Fabric

Every woven fabric is built from two sets of yarns running at right angles to each other.

The warp runs along the length of the roll – the long way. The weft runs across the width – the short way. They interlock to create the base structure of the fabric.

Warp yarns run along the length of the roll. Weft yarns run across the width. Together they form the structural foundation of every woven fabric.

Why does this matter? Because warp and weft can be engineered differently. The yarn thickness, tension, and spacing in each direction affects how the fabric handles load.

Look at the ripSMART technical data sheet and you will see tensile strength listed separately for warp and weft. That is not an accident. A fabric that handles pulling in one direction well may behave differently when pulled across.

Real example: ripSMART 400gsm

Warp tensile strength: greater than 2,000N. Weft tensile strength: greater than 1,000N. Both are high – but they are not identical. The direction matters, which is why understanding warp and weft is useful when specifying fabric for applications that experience force from multiple directions, like a tent under wind load.

03. Weave Type: How Structure Controls Behaviour

The weave is how those warp and weft yarns interlock. It is one of the most underrated factors in fabric selection – and one of the most visible once you know what to look for.

Plain weave, twill weave, and ripstop reinforced weave. Each distributes stress differently – and each suits different applications.

Plain Weave

Simple over-under interlocking. Stable, consistent, and widely used. Strong in both directions.

Diagonal structure that improves drape and flexibility. Recognisable by the diagonal line on the surface.

Upholstery and apparel fabrics

Ripstop Weave

Reinforcement yarns woven into a grid at regular intervals. Limits how far a tear can travel once it starts.

The ripstop weave is worth understanding in more detail, because it solves a specific problem.

All fabrics can be damaged. A sharp edge, a point of stress, a small puncture – fabric is not indestructible. The question is not whether damage happens. It is what happens next.

In a plain weave fabric, a small tear can continue to propagate. The structure offers no specific resistance to the tear spreading from one yarn to the next.

In a ripstop weave, the reinforcement yarns act as barriers. When a tear reaches one of those thicker yarns, it has much less room to continue. The damage stays small.

04. Coated vs Laminated: What Is on the Surface Matters

Weaving gives you structure. Coating or lamination gives you surface performance.

Coated Fabrics

  • A polymer layer applied onto the woven base
  • Seals the surface fibres against water and contaminants
  • Can be flexible or rigid depending on formulation
  • Common coatings: PVC, acrylic, PU

Laminated Fabrics

  • Multiple layers bonded under heat and pressure
  • Layered barrier performance
  • Structure depends entirely on the materials used
  • Can range from very flexible to relatively rigid

Most of the fabrics in the Smart Ikhaya range are coated. The coating type tells you a great deal about how the fabric will perform.

ripSMART uses an acrylic coating. It is integrated into the fabric during manufacturing – not applied as a surface treatment afterwards. That distinction matters because a topical treatment can wear off. An integrated coating does not degrade the same way.

tarpSMART PVC uses a PVC coating – a much heavier polymer layer that makes the fabric fully waterproof, weldable, and extremely resistant to abrasion. That is why PVC is the fabric of choice for marquee tents, truck covers, industrial tarps, and applications where waterproofing is non-negotiable.

The coating is not decoration. It is engineering. And the type of coating is often more important than the GSM underneath it.

05. Waterproof vs Water-Repellent vs Water-Resistant: Not the Same Thing

These terms are used interchangeably in the market. They should not be. There are three distinct performance levels.

The difference in plain language:

Water-resistant: Slows water penetration but will not stop it completely. A basic level of protection suitable for light exposure only.

Water-repellent / DWR (Durable Water Repellent): A treatment applied to fabric that causes water to bead and run off the surface. More effective than water-resistant, but can still wet through under sustained pressure or prolonged exposure. The treatment can wear off over time and may need reapplying.

Waterproof: Water does not penetrate under normal conditions. Measured as a hydrostatic head rating – how many millimeters of water pressure the fabric resists before water passes through. This is the standard you want for outdoor covers, tents, and structures.

tarpSMART PVC goes further – PVC coated fabrics are fully waterproof and can be heat-welded at the seams, which means the joins are as waterproof as the fabric itself. For applications where seam integrity matters, that is a significant advantage.

06. Treatments: The Final Layer of Protection

Treatments are applied on top of the fabric system to add specific performance properties for specific environments.

UV stabilisation slows the degradation caused by prolonged sunlight exposure. In South Africa, where outdoor fabrics can spend years in direct sun, this is not optional – it is essential. ripSMART carries a colour fastness to light rating of 4 or above on the Blue Scale, tested to ISO 105-804.

Anti-fungal treatment reduces mould and mildew growth in humid or coastal environments. ripSMART passes the AC M/L 13 fungal resistance test across all weights. For safari tents and outdoor structures that stay erected through wet seasons, this matters significantly.

Flame-retardant vs fire-resistant – these are not the same thing. Flame-retardant fabric has been chemically treated to slow the spread of flames, giving more reaction time in the event of a fire. Fire-resistant fabric inherently resists burning without chemical treatment – the resistance is built into the fibre itself. For most commercial applications, flame-retardant treatment is the relevant specification. Always confirm the required standard at the point of order, as FR specifications vary by application and region.

Block-out treatment prevents light from penetrating through the fabric. This is relevant for privacy screens, blackout blinds, exhibition structures, and applications where light control matters. Putting It Together: A Worked Example

A customer needs fabric for a permanent safari lodge tent structure. They ask: “What GSM do I need?”

The honest answer is: GSM is not the first question to ask. Here is how to think through it properly.

Is higher GSM always better?
Not necessarily. Higher GSM means more material, which often contributes to durability – but the weave construction, coating type, and treatments matter just as much. A well-engineered 300gsm fabric can outperform a poorly constructed 500gsm fabric in specific applications. GSM is one input, not the final answer.
