Account for Shrinkage: Always order 5% more length than your final measurement.
Important: Clear PVC has “memory” from being on a roll. You must allow the material to “relax” for 24 hours after unrolling before you perform your final trim or stitching. This prevents puckering and ensures a professional, flat finish.
Smart Tip: Joining Panels & Custom Welding
Since our standard widths are 1.4m and 1.5m, wider openings require joining two or more panels. At Smart Ikhaya, we offer professional High-Frequency (HF) Welding services to help you create oversized covers or blinds.
Choosing Your Join:
- High-Frequency Welding (Waterproof): This creates a permanent, 100% waterproof molecular bond. It is the only choice for outdoor blinds, marquee sides, and boat enclosures where rain protection is a priority.
- Industrial Stitching: A cost-effective method for DIY projects. Note that stitching is not waterproof and will eventually allow moisture to seep through the needle holes unless treated.
When we weld two panels together, there is a overlap of approximately 20mm to 30mm.
A Note on Visibility & Aesthetics:
- The “Seam” Line: While the weld is incredibly strong, it is not invisible. You will see a clear “seam” line where the two layers overlap.
- Planning Your View: If visibility is your top priority (e.g., a luxury patio view), we recommend planning your weld lines to align with your vertical pillars or frames to keep the main “window” area unobstructed.

The Smart Ikhaya Pro-Tip: The “Relax & Shrink” Rule
One of the most common mistakes when working with Crystal Clear PVC is tensioning or stitching it too quickly. Because PVC is a high-performance thermal material, it “breathes” and reacts to the ambient temperature of your workspace.
Why You Must Leave it Overnight
Clear PVC has “memory.” When we cut it from the roll for your order, the tension is released. If you stitch or frame it immediately, the material will naturally contract (shrink) as it settles.
- For 400 Micron: This thinner material is prone to puckering. If sewn immediately, the PVC will shrink and pull the surrounding canvas into wavy, distorted lines.
- For 750 Micron: This heavy-duty grade is much stiffer and exerts significant force. If installed in a rigid frame without relaxing, it can actually bow the frame or put extreme stress on your zippers and stitching.
The Professional Process:
- Unroll and Lay Flat: Once you receive your PVC, unroll it on a clean, flat surface.
- The Wait Time: * 400 Micron: Allow 12–24 hours to reach thermal equilibrium. Because the 400 Micron is thinner and more flexible, it is prone to puckering. If you sew it into a canvas frame too tightly without letting it relax, the PVC will shrink and pull the fabric with it, creating those ugly “waves” along your seams
- 750 Micron: Because of its density, we recommend a full 24–48 hours for the material to “find its shape.” This ensures that when you install it, the clarity remains perfect and the tension on your zippers or frames stays exactly where you want it.”
- The “Rough Cut” Strategy: If you are on a tight deadline, do a “rough cut” (leaving 50mm extra on all sides), let it sit for a few hours, and then perform your final precision trim.
